I’m in mourning today. I’m in mourning for the America we could have been. The America that I thought we were moving forward to become. One in which the promise of a brighter future could be realized for everyone. Instead, America will continue in it’s decline and become even more of an embarrassment on the world stage.
I am heartbroken at the results of this election. Heartbroken that over half of my fellow Americans, once again chose fear and hatred over democracy and unity. Men chose their fragile egos over supporting women. Their fear over women’s independence and bodily choice meant more to them than choosing what was best for the country.
I know there are lots of men who voted for Kamala Harris but not enough did and that showcases the inherent sexism in this country. Men will pretend that they have respect for women until they are talking amongst themselves. I have heard the things they say about women and I have heard the disgusting remarks men I know and work with said during this campaign. Their comments were never based on policy or competency, only the crassest lies their minds could come up with.
The Trump campaign spent an inordinate amount of time and money appealing to men like these and their belief that they are superior to women. If the campaign wasn’t stoking their sexism, they were inciting their racist fears. That is all that campaign boils down to, no policy, no direction, just fear and hatred.
So now we will bring this wannabe tyrant back into the White House and enable foreign dictators to play our country like a puppet. They accomplished the goal of destroying our democracy without ever having to put a boot on the ground or fire a bullet. This has been Putin’s goal for a long time and we just freely handed it over to him.
Steve and I were at Oktoberfest in Munich last month and were talking to some Austalians about the election. They were worried about a possible Trump reelection. People all over the world were worried that America would choose wrong. I spent hours yesterday scrolling through Threads reading posts from around the world begging us as Americans to do the right thing, as it has global implications. Yet the sheeple of America, once again, chose the path of division and isolationism.
They let the billionaire class mislead them with lies, and now we will all pay the high cost of this misinformed decision. I feel betrayed by my country. Up to the last moment yesterday, I truly believed that America would elect the person who isn’t a felon, who isn’t an abuser of women, and who isn’t only running to make themselves richer. Yet, I was wrong and I am going to be grieving the death of this dream for quite some time. I need a hug.
